

Born in Turin in 1741 he is the last son of Carlo Emanuele III (1701-1773) and his third wife Elisabetta Teresa di Lorena (born in 1711 and who died on the 3rd of July 1741, of puerperal fever, twelve days after the birth of her son in the castle of Venaria). The youngest and favourite of the king’s ten children, in 1765 Benedetto M. Maurizio received the Castle of Agliè from his father Carlo Emanuele III, along with the assets within the territories of Bairo, Ozegna and Torre which the king had purchased from Carlo Emanuele and Francesco Flaminio di San Martino.
The prince also received Chiablese Palace in Turin as an appannage, it would become his residence, along with the lands at Santhià, Trino, Borgomanero, Bra, Centallo and Dronero.
The king’s numerous children also lived in the Royal Palace of Turin along with the king, these were the children born from his marriage to Polissena d’Assia and the nieces and nephews born from the marriage (31 May 1750) of the Duke of Savoy Vittorio Amedeo III (1726-1796) with the Infanta of Spain Maria Antonia Ferdinanda of Borbone (1729-1785, the daughter of Filippo V and Isabella Farnese).
Between 1771 and 1775 great restoration works took place at Agliè as well as the preparation of the castle for its new function as a Ducal Castle, the architect Ignazio Birago di Borgaro was appointed to draw up the plans.
On the 19th of March 1775 Benedetto Maria Maurizio married his niece Maria Anna di Savoia in the Chapel of Santo Sudario in Turin. She was the daughter of his brother Vittorio Amedeo III and the Queen Maria Antonia Ferdinanda di Borbone.
With the Regie Patenti of the 19th of June 1796, following the treaty of Cherasco, the title of Duke of Chiablese was changed into Marquis of Ivrea.
With the French occupation the entire Court and the Duke of Chiablese left Turin for Sardinia.
On the 19th of March 1799 the Duke was named Governor of the Towers on the Island of Sardinia but after a few months he left the island to move to Rome with his wife, where he died on the 12th of January 1808. He was buried in the church of S. Niccolò dei Cesarini.
